Many of our Grant Recipients are on Frontline
Many recipients of vocational education grants from The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona (TRVFA) received their grant to cover costs of obtaining a medical-related vocational certification.  We know this enabled the ability to earn a better income, but we also know that their new vocation has them right in the middle of serving those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or those who are vulnerable and at high risk of being seriously impacted if exposed.

If any of you who are working on the font lines in health care would be willing to share a short personal story and photo of you in your professional garb, we would love to share your experience on our website, Facebook page and possibly printed printed material like brochures or posters.  You can submit your photo as an attachment to an e-mailed response to this newsletter telling your story.

We know the ripple effect of good coming from your TRVFA grant will keep spreading.  We thank you!
Partnering to Make Water Available Closer to Home
One of the areas hardest hit by COVID-19 in Arizona has been the Navajo nation.  Many homes there are quite remote and have never had a readily available source of clean water.  With an Emergency Relieve grant from The Rotary Foundation, Rotarians in Arizona have partnered with Dig Deep to deliver fillable water tanks to 75 of these remote homes.  This will serve two of Rotary's areas of focus:
  1. Providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene
  2. Fighting disease - by enabling better social distancing
Having readily-available water at their home will eliminate the need for these families to travel to centrally-located sites to obtain water where social distancing is nearly impossible.
For Rotary the World is Our Community
In a world impacted by COVID-19, our tendency is to turn inward, to ourselves, our family and our own communities. But if you paraphrase Rotary’s Vision Statement “ take action to create lasting change-across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves” This moves us in a much broader vision of what our community is, and in that sense it’s what International Service is about.  Rotary’s 7 areas of focus: Peace and Conflict Resolution, Water and Sanitation, Disease prevention and Treatment, Maternal and Child health, Basic Education and Literacy, Economic and Community Development and The Environment, give us our basic road map for Rotary’s impact not only at home but around the world.

It was not very long after Rotary was formed that the founding members did their first community project-a public toilet. A few years later they did their first international project, a medical clinic in Canada in 1912.  You could say that International Service is part of our Rotary DNA. While many of our fellow Rotarians would say that my wife brought me into Rotary, I would say that International Service has kept me in Rotary.
